It is not only about looking good and being thin by losing weight, eating lighter, lesser and healthier food nowadays. People care about what they eat because they want to stay healthier and live longer. I have always heard people talking about Asians being normally ‘smaller’, but it does not mean that they are healthier.
Why are Asian people eating rice thin? talks about how traditionally, Asians ate unrefined starch and had more activity, which cause them to stay ‘thin’. Besides, we look ‘smaller’ because we have a thinner build and less musculature. In fact, nowadays, most of the Asian people are no longer thin or they are skinny fat and have diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Find out if you are a skinny fat person!
However, if Asians follow the old eating habits, they can be the real ‘thin rice-eater’. Following the Asian’s old living habits might not be feasible for my and most of the people’s lifestyle nowadays, but the idea of the healthier living is worth to pursue. Due to the pressure to conform to conventional aesthetics of “thinness”, I started todo exercise and take care of what I eat. My weight has gone down a lot, but I am still not that ‘thin’. During this process, I enjoyed exercising and watching what I ate not simply because I look nicer, but also feel lighter, healthier and happier. Since then, my goal is not becoming ‘thin’ but healthy.
I used to do fasting or not eat carbohydrate for weight loss. It works at first, but I was very unhappy and felt guilty if I could not keep the diet. Those extreme way of diet did not last long, and I gain back those weight in a week after I gave up. I then follow the Asian diet since I can’t live without noodle and rice. This diet emphasizes high consumption of plant-based foods such as vegetables, beans, fruits, nuts and herbs, with adequate amounts of rice and meat or seafood. It gives me what my body needs.
One of my favorite Asian diet dishes is Chinese cabbage with steamed chicken, served with brown rice. It is very easy to make, tasty and healthy! I really enjoy eating nutsas my snack. Be aware of the fat content in nuts, control the amount you take. For my snack, I will make nuts granola myself to make the nuts less boring. I make sure I drink enough water or have some tea after dinner. With the Asian diet, meat (especially red meat) and sweets are less encouraged (consume just once in a week or even once in a month), but YOLO! I will still give myself some cheat daysto reward myself. Depending on my schedule, I will have my cheat day on Sunday, sometimes once a week, sometimes once in a fortnight or even once a month. My diet is very flexible, and I always try a broad variety of recipes, importantly with fresh ingredients. Those are the key for me to stick to the diet and feel happy about my life.
I am not saying Asian diet is the best diet. There are heaps of dietsthat help you stay healthy. Choose what works for you and remember you can also alternate them or even fuse them!
